Understanding Your Injury

What Happened to
Your ACL?

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a key stabilizer in the center of your knee. It prevents the shinbone from sliding forward and provides rotational stability. ACL injuries commonly occur during pivoting, sudden stops, or awkward landings — especially in sports like football, basketball, and skiing.

Whether you’ve had reconstructive surgery or are following a conservative path, our ACL rehabilitation program follows strict, evidence-based protocols to ensure you return to sport safely — with re-injury rates significantly lower than going it alone.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED

A full return to sport after ACL reconstruction typically takes 9-12 months. Rushing back earlier significantly increases re-injury risk. Conservative (non-surgical) rehab may have a shorter timeline, but still requires several months of dedicated work. We guide you through every phase with clear milestones.

Some individuals can successfully return to certain sports without surgery through intensive physiotherapy — particularly if their sport doesn’t involve pivoting or cutting movements. However, this depends on your knee stability, activity demands, and personal goals. We help you make an informed decision.

Quadriceps strengthening, hamstring strengthening, balance/proprioception training, and eventually plyometric and sport-specific drills form the core of ACL rehab. The exact exercises change throughout your recovery phases. Never follow a generic program — your rehab must match your surgical procedure and progress.

We use objective return-to-sport criteria including strength testing (at least 90% symmetry compared to your uninjured leg), hop testing, movement quality assessment, and psychological readiness. Passing these tests significantly reduces re-injury risk.

ACL injuries do increase the long-term risk of knee osteoarthritis, regardless of whether you have surgery. However, proper rehabilitation — including restoring full knee motion, building strength, and optimizing movement patterns — can help protect your knee and reduce this risk.
