Understanding the Technique

What Is
Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a modern, evidence-based treatment used by physiotherapists to relieve muscle pain and dysfunction. Unlike acupuncture (which is based on traditional Chinese medicine), dry needling targets myofascial trigger points — tight bands of muscle that cause pain and restrict movement.

A very fine, single-use sterile needle is inserted directly into the trigger point, causing the muscle to relax and release. The result? Immediate pain relief, improved blood flow, and restored range of motion.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED

No. While both use fine needles, dry needling is based on Western medical science and targets specific myofascial trigger points in muscles. Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on energy meridians. They are distinct treatments with different philosophies.

Most people feel minimal discomfort — often described as a brief twitch or cramp sensation when the needle hits the trigger point. This is followed by a feeling of release and relaxation. The needles used are extremely thin, and the procedure is generally well-tolerated.

This depends on your condition and response to treatment. Some patients experience significant relief after 1-2 sessions, while chronic conditions may require 4-6 sessions. Your physiotherapist will discuss a treatment plan during your initial assessment.

Minor side effects can include temporary soreness at the needle site, mild bruising, or fatigue after treatment. These are normal and usually resolve within 24-48 hours. Serious side effects are extremely rare when performed by a trained professional.

Dry needling can be safe during pregnancy when performed by an experienced physiotherapist, but certain areas and points are avoided. Always inform your therapist if you are pregnant or think you might be, so treatment can be adapted appropriately.
